The art of calligraphy in the Arab and Persian world is considered to be one of the highest artistic expressions. The importance of the written word gave rise to a myriad of calligraphic styles which have endless artistic possibilities for composition and design.

In this workshop we will work with two of the most important styles in Arab and Persian calligraphy, the thuluth and nastaliq scripts, as a way to deepen the understanding of this art and its guiding principles.

The workshop will cover:
– Brief history of Islamic calligraphy, different styles, tools and materials.
– Introduction to the letters in the different styles and their calligraphic forms.
– Exercises on writing techniques with traditional methods.
– Creations and compositions with calligraphy elements.

Because of the method of instruction, previous knowledge of the Arabic language is not necessary.
