Nuria García Masip and Bahman Panahi

Where in #Brief15? Nuria García Masip and Bahman Panahi will inaugurate the festival with a performance mixing calligraphy and music, and they will also give a workshop at Casa Árabe on Arab and Persian calligraphy.

Nuria García Masip started her interest in islamic art in Morocco, where she learned the maghrebí style with her master, Hamidi Bel’Aid. As her passion for calligraphy continued, Nuria went to the US to study with Mohamed Zakariya, and later on to Istanbul, Turkey where she would work with the great masters Hasan Çelebi and Davut Bektas. In 2007, she acheived a diploma in calligraphy (ijazah) in the thuluth and naskh styles. Nuria lives in Paris, where she teaches and works with calligraphy. She has won prestigious international prizes and participates actively in exhibitions, conferences and international seminars.

Bahman Panahi is an Iranian calligrapher and musician. From a family of artists, he was educated according to the traditional system, in calligraphy as well as in music. He studied with the great calligraphy masters Amirkhani, Foradi and Kaboli, and the great musicians Zarif, Lotfi and Zahed-Shirazi. He obtained the title of master at the Iranian Institute of Calligraphy in 1986 and graduated from the Fine Arts University of Tehran and the Ecole des Beaux Arts of Valenciennes, France. His PhD thesis, done at the Sorbonne University, about “The musicality of lines and dots” examines the relation between music and calligraphy. Now he lives in Paris, where he splits his time between teaching, workshops, conferences, exhibitions and concerts all over the world.
