What’s Brief Festival?

Brief is a multidisciplinary festival gathering graphic design and other related disciplines, such as photography, video, 3D, branding, motion graphics, typography, art direction, illustration and lettering. It is a source of inspiration, a way to have access to the latest news, an opportunity to learn and a chance to bring together professionals of the graphic world?

Stephan Gessler

Stephan Gessler was born and raised in Bonn, Germany. He studied in Brunswick, London and Berlin and graduated from Berlin University of Fine Arts (Universität der Künste) in 2001 with a diploma in architecture. Starting with theatre design during his studies, Stephan has been working ever since in the production of many international feature films as art director and set designer, as well as production designer for German movies.
He has worked on small, medium and large budget films for directors such as Quentin Tarantino, the Wachowsky Brothers, Guillermo Del Toro, Kevin Spacey, Roland Emmerich and Wes Anderson. He was nominated for Best Art Director by the Art Directors Guild Award in Los Angeles, for his work in V for Vendetta, Inglorious Basterds and Anonymous. His latest project as art director is The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Sergio del Puerto aka Serial Cut™

Art director, Sergio del Puerto defines the studio he founded, Serial Cut™ as “Image Makers since 1999”.
The studio, based in Madrid, specializes in art direction for advertising, and it is recognised for its graphics still lifes, the use of typography and 3D techniques. His genuine style combines pop culture with surrealism, leading to iconic images that always invite a second and more detailed reading. Serial Cut has now reached a global recognition and works for international clients such as Adobe, Nike, MTV, HSBC, Playstation, IBM, Toyota, Diesel, Sony, LG, Vodafone, Puma, Absolut, Pepe Jeans, Microsoft, Volkswagen, The NY Times Magazine, The Guardian…

Cruz Novillo

Born in Cuenca he currently lives in Madrid, where his studio Cruz más Cruz is also located. In 1965, working as a creative director, he left Publicidad Clarín to start his own design studio (one of the first in Spain). Here, some of the most important brand identeties of the country were created, such as: the branding of Correos, Banco Pastor, Tesoro Público, PSOE, COPE, El Mundo, Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia, Renfe, Fundación ONCE, Repsol, and also notebanks for the Banco de España, the flag of the Comunidad de Madrid, etc. He received many awards like the Premio Nacional de Diseño 1997, Premio Castilla-La Mancha de Diseño 2008… and since 2006 he is member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.

Clara Montagut

Clara Montagut is the art director of the Spanish version of Esquire magazine and artistic advisor of magazines such as Orizon Robb Report and co-editor of the magazine The Sewing craft. In 2011, Esquire was considered the best magazine designed in Spain and Portugal. Highlights include the use of photography and the simplicity of their covers up to the full ausence (absence?) holder. Before joining Esquire, Clara Montagut was graphic designer for agencies and studios, and before she was the chief designer of Rolling Stone.

Enrique Bonet

Enrique Bonet is an exhibition’s scenographer since 1995, he has participated in over 120 projects with national and international institutions. La Cocina en su Tinta (Biblioteca Nacional Madrid), 20 Suits for Europe (Instituto Cer- vantes Brussels, Budapest, Madrid), Maria Lonza, Modachrome, Museum of Costume in Madrid, Cristina García Rodero (Ayuntamiento de Madrid) Yves Saint Laurent: Dialogue with Art (Caixa Galicia, La Coruña), Tamara de Lem- picka (Casa das Artes, Vigo), Isabel Muñoz (Centro Cultural de la Villa, Ma- drid), Animals on Stage (Centre National du Costume de Scène , France), Ten Views (Metropolitan Museum, Tokyo), Magnum’s First (Channel Foundation) and the Miami Book Fair 2013.

Sign Painters de Faythe Levine y Sam Macon

Sign Painters: the Movie, directed by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon is 
an 80 minute documentary movie about the dedicated practitioners, their time-honoured methods, and their appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. Sign Painters, the first anecdotal history of the craft, features the stories of more than two dozen sign painters working in cities throughout the United States. The documentary and the book profile sign painters young and old, from the new vanguard working solo to collaborative shops such as San Francisco’s New Bohemia Signs and New York’s Colossal Media’s Sky High Murals.
